AB  - Recent research efforts of academia, automotive industry and transport government sector point to intelligent transportation systems (ITS) as a key technology for improving road safety, traffic efficiency and comfort driving. Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANET) have significant potential to enable applications in order to enhance traffic safety. The interaction among vehicles and infrastructure allows real-time communications that provide information to drivers in hazardous situations, avoiding accidents. This article provides an overview of vehicular ad hoc networks; describes the fundamental concepts, communication standards and vehicular applications. In addition, this paper presents an evaluation of VANET simulators.
