AB  - The aim of this work is to identify what has been studied on the Colombian railway and to propose themain topics to be studied in order to better understand the future of rail freight transport in Colom-bia. The paper is based on a descriptive literature review of the Colombian railways, which allowed toidentify 4 recurring subjects: governmental administrative problems, competition with road mode, coaltransportation, and some technical issues such as geometric design, railway capacity, efficiency, modalintegration, and transport modeling. In addition to the review, which is valuable for decision makerson international trade, economic policy, and regional economy, this paper identifies some questions forfuture research.
