The data derive from ethnographic research conducted with prominent Cali rap groups in 1998 and 2000. Discussion centers on two themes: (1) characterization of the type of identity young people construct around this cultural phenomenon, and (2) analysis of these identities as a type of symbolic productivity by which these young people resist and fi ght the conditions of poverty and social exclusion in which they live. %K Jóvenes %K Youngsters %K Ciencias sociales %K Social sciences %K Hip hop %K Sectores populares %K Working-class neighborhoods %K Identidad social %K Social identity %K Productividad cultural %K Cultural productivity %K Marginalidad social %K Marginality, Social %K Exclusión social %K Social exclusion %~ GOEDOC, SUB GOETTINGEN
