This study examines the impact of code - switching (CS) on grammar and vocabulary learning in a 6 - year - old online EFL student from Colombia. While CS is widely used in language teaching, opinions on its effectiveness remain divided. This action research case study employed a mixed - methods approach, using observations, pre - and post - tests, and interviews with the student and his mother across two instructional cycles — one incorporating CS and one minimizing it. In Cycle 1, CS was used for explanations, directions, and comprehension, gradually decreasing as the student adapted. In Cycle 2, the student showed improved English and computer skills but still relied on CS for difficult concepts. Interviews revealed that CS reduced anxiety, increased engagement, and supported learning, though both the student and his mother favored gradual reduction as proficiency improved. Pre - and post - tests showed progress beyond scores, including gains in confidence, speaking, listening, and writing. Overall, CS facilitated comprehension and motivation, particularly for beginners, and when used strategically, it can optimize learning while transitioning toward greater English immersion.eng
