A great number of students in public schools in Cali, Colombia, encountered many troubles in the moment, they needed to speak English. While they have been taking lessons in English for a couple of years now, the little amount of exposure to the language beyond the classroom and the socio-emotional problems make them anxious and result in low self-confidence, especially when it comes to perform in oral tasks. The group of students who it is aimed to investigate in this study are ninth graders with A0-A1 levels and the purpose is to investigate how scaffolding can be employed to reduce anxiety and build confidence during oral activities. The work was undertaken in two public schools, with qualitative action research methodology. An action plan was put in place to involve supportive, graded strategies, such as modelling, repetition, and peer involvement. Interviews of students before and after the intervention provided a way to assess changes in confidence and emotions. The findings suggested that when students have emotional and academic support, they are encouraged to take risks, to take part actively in english class and trust that they can learn. The findings imply that scaffolding could significantly contribute to the construction of a classroom space in which students can feel comfortable to talk and grow as language learners.eng
