(Universidad Icesi, 2012-01-01) García Pérez De Lema, Domingo; Gálvez Albarracín, Edgar Julián
The objective of this article is to provide an empirical verification of the existing relationship between the degree of innovation of a company and its performance. To this end, a study was carried out which involved 60 medium and high technology mSMEs in Cali, Colombia. The results of the study show that innovation in products and processes has a positive influence on the performance of the mSMEs. These results not only reinforce the claim that innovation can not only be a sustainable competitive advantage, but can also be useful to make entrepreneurs aware of the need to innovate in order to improve competitiveness, and to help public administration officials in their role as promoters of innovation through financial and non-financial assistance programs.

(Universidad Icesi, 2013-01-01) García Pérez De Lema, Domingo; Madrid-Guijarro, Antonia; Barona Zuluaga, Bernardo
Innovation enables companies to achieve a sustainable timely competitive advantage and is a key determinant of economic growth. Funding has often been mentioned as a major barrier to carry out innovation activities. This empirical paper analyzes the relationship between funding sources and innovative activity by IberoAmerican micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (Msmes) based on the results of a survey conducted on a sample of 1970 firms. The results indicate a significant positive relationship between the use of borrowed funds and innovative activity. This demonstrates the importance of mechanisms to facilitate Msmes access to external debt funding in order to achieve high levels of innovation.
