Ítem The impact of authentic materials on rural secondary english learners(Universidad Icesi, 2022-01-01) Santander Caicedo, Birna Rosario; Portilla Quintero, Brayan; Asesor TesisThis Master’s research aims at describing to what extent the implementation of authentic materials (brochures, advertisements, product descriptions) impacts the intercultural competence of secondary EFL learners from a public rural high school in Nariño. This paper was carried out by collecting and analyzing the data by reviewing key concepts and designing a didactic sequence. Before applying all the elements of the didactic sequence, a semi-structured interview was applied. After this, a written and speaking pre-test was employed. Then, the didactic sequence was executed based on the concept of authenticity. Next, a written and speaking post-test phase was conducted for comparing results. Finally, an online questionnaire was employed to find out students’ perceptions after the implementation of this teaching strategy. After all, considering the findings, the application of materials based on authenticity helped students enhance their intercultural communicative competence and English-speaking and writing skills. A supplementary benefit of this didactic strategy, the application of the questionnaire shows an increase in curiosity and motivation when using brochures, advertisements, and product descriptions for speaking tasks.Ítem Evaluación de la efectividad de un programa de formación para el desarrollo de las competencias interculturales, implementado en una empresa del Valle del Cauca(Universidad Icesi, 2018-01-01) Castillo Barrios, Nora Yamileth; Nader, Martín; Asesor TesisEvaluar la eficiencia de un programa de formación para el desarrollo de las Competencias Interculturales, implica un proceso investigativo que articula elementos como la observación, la documentación, la argumentación; y para este caso en concreto, por los escasos estudios realizados en Colombia, puede dificultar por momentos la elaboración de los análisis; tal vez por tratarse de un tema relativamente nuevo. Revisar las metodologías y los modelos usados en las diferentes experiencias encontradas en países europeos, hacen de este estudio; un reto, para educadores, líderes de organizaciones y profesionales de diferentes áreas, a fin de que puedan presentar propuestas que resulten apropiadas para el desarrollo de esta competencia.Ítem Perception of the world through language : do spanish and english speakers perceive the world differently? a review of the literature on the sapir-whorf hypothesis(Universidad Icesi, 2019-01-01) Vanegas Bonilla, Nathalie; Marr, Tim; Asesor TesisResearch on perception of the world through language as addressed by the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis have been presented since the 1940’s and continues to be popular nowadays among linguists, psychologists, sociologists, and anthropologists. This review of the literature on the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis aims to explain the relevance of the weak version of the hypothesis, known as linguistic relativity, over the strong version of the hypothesis. In addition, a series of research studies supporting the hypothesis will be presented from three points of view: differences in lexis/semantics among languages, sociocultural aspects in language, and enhancement of cognitive ability. Subsequently, the two research questions of this report will be approached: To what extent can it be said that Spanish speakers experience the world in a different way to English speakers? What possible applications in teaching can this hypothesis have? Results of this literature review strongly suggest that different languages can influence the way speakers express, think about and perceive their reality, and that Spanish and English speakers can experience the world differently due to the linguistic features of its languages.Ítem Impact on Intercultural Competence When Studying Abroad and the Moderating Role of Personality(Taylor & Francis (Routledge), 2016-10-14) RamÍrez Robledo, Carlos EnriqueThe purpose of this study is to assess how studying abroad impacts the development of intercultural competence and the moderating role of student’s personality. This research uses a pre-post design with a sample of 264 undergraduate students from four Colombian universities; it includes a group of students who participated in a one semester study-abroad program and a control group who did not travel. The average level of increase in intercultural competence for the students who went abroad was 0.511 standard deviations above the average of those who had not studied abroad. The results from hierarchical linear regression did not yield any evidence that supports the moderating effects of the personality factors on the relation between study abroad and intercultural competence.Ítem Raising intercultural awareness at a public high school by means of a didactic sequence(Universidad Icesi, 2019-01-01) Vásquez Huertas , Jennifer; Marr, Timothy; Asesor TesisRaising intercultural awareness is a process of negotiating meaning and to have a shared understanding among people with different ideas, opinions and beliefs; it is about appreciating difference as the rule, not the exception. Public schools do not usually work with resources which engage students in intercultural exchanges and intercultural encounters; as a result, five units were put together into a didactic sequence in order to raise intercultural awareness and notice language; so that seventh grade students find the English that makes them happy (Blommaert, 2016). Results shed light on the complex process students go through when interacting with disbelief and curiosity, yet the main findings account as evidence of the significant changes students went through after explicit instruction by means of a didactic sequence. In the concluding section, the author highlights the need of taking into account students’ wants and needs, as well as the prior knowledge and beliefs they have.
