A decision support tool for healthcare providers to evaluate readiness and impacts of adopting supply chain data standards

Healthcare providers are under increasing pressure to reduce waste, eliminate unnecessary costs and redundant efforts, thereby improving the quality and consistency of healthcare delivery. Lack of automation and the lack of use of global identifiers for products and locations, also known as supply chain data standards, are two critical factors that can help streamline providers operations and improve process efficiency. Despite widespread consensus among various stakeholders, healthcare providers lack a well-defined approach towards adopting and implementing data standards. Supply chain data standards can be defined as a set of product and location identifiers which are used in supply chain related processes and transactions.

El suministro de energía a las áreas marginales de las grandes ciudades se ha convertido en un grave problema para las administraciones municipales. Es común que sus habitantes tomen ilegalmente el servicio, desviando cables, y realicen conexiones domiciliarias lejanas a los estándares de la industria. Cortocircuitos e inestabilidad en el voltaje suministrado –incluso para quienes la reciben legalmente– es el efecto claro en el servicio para las familias; importantes pérdidas económicas, derivadas de la no facturación de la energía robada y el costo de los mayores esfuerzos requeridos en mantenimiento de las redes, lo es para las empresas proveedoras. El problema es de tal magnitud que amenaza incluso con la inviabilidad de las empresas proveedoras del servicio–como ha ocurrido en la costa norte colombiana–.
Modelo de benchmarking de la cadena de abastecimiento para Pymes manufactureras

The benchmarking model for the supply chain of small and medium-sized manufacturers provides a handy guide for improving the logistics of their production processes. This article covers both the development of the model and the main results of its implementation in a sample of food processing companies in the City of Cali, surveyed by PRODES (a sector development program). The results of this study, obtained through trial applications of the model, provide guidelines both for ongoing research and for the future application of the model to other sectors. The model is based on the results of a study titled «Proposal for the Development of Integrated Logistical Systems for Small and Medium Enterprises», undertaken by the authors in furtherance of a Master’s Degree in Business Administration, in agreement with Tulane University
A Novel GS1 Data Standard Adoption Roadmap for Healthcare Providers

The use of GS1 Data Standards is envisioned to improve the efficiency of the healthcare supply chain as it did for the retail supply chain. The healthcare industry, especially providers, acknowledges their potentials; however, there are misconceptions and lack of understanding the associated costs and expected benefits. This study presents an adoption roadmap for GS1 Data Standards at the provider level in healthcare industry. The developed roadmap is a result of systematic efforts at conducting extensive studies, examining the best practices, and interacting with industry leaders. The adoption roadmap includes different levels and sublevels to provide a flexible foundation for healthcare providers where alternative adoption paths will be available for their immediate needs and requirements. Sublevels have a recommended precedence structure to realize maximum gains from the adoptions. The feasibility and practicality of the developed roadmap has been validated by two pilot studies, which were conducted in collaboration with two hospital provider partners. The pilot studies helped identify potential benefits as well as roadblocks and barriers for different levels of GS1 Data Standards adoption. The results indicate that the adoption is not an easy process and may require many workarounds; however, the potential gains are significant.

Este libro, que esperamos sea también una memoria, está organizado en tres secciones: Didáctica e Innovación, Reflexión Docente y Legado. Y es precisamente ese legado, el de la universidad y sus profesoras, el que se destaca en cada uno de los relatos. En cada experiencia docente de estas mujeres se evidencia el proyecto educativo de la Universidad Icesi, el cual está orientado al desarrollo del ser humano pleno. Con cada palabra ellas han dado cuenta de ese compromiso que tienen con su quehacer profesional y nos regalaron una nota de inspiración para seguir formando a nuestros estudiantes, para enseñarles a aprender a aprender. Asimismo, el desarrollo humano de estas docentes coincide con lo que Martha Nussbaum denomina “el cultivo de la humanidad” y que requiere de, al menos, tres capacidades básicas, que también son visibles en sus relatos: examinar críticamente sus vidas y tradiciones y desarrollar la capacidad de cuestionar toda forma de dogmatismo; ser ciudadanos capaces de construir una idea de comunidad que se sobrepone a identidades específicas; y ser capaces de situarse en el lugar de otras personas, es decir, de comprender sus emociones, sentimientos y aspiraciones [Yuri Takeuchi Tan, Decana de la Facultad de Ciencias de la Salud].
Technology assessment for an inventory management process in a hospital unit

The penetration of Auto Identification and Data Capture Technology (Auto ID DC) in healthcare logistics is low. A recent American Health Association ( AHA) study shows that 16% of hospitals use barcode technology for supply chain management purposes, and 3% use Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). Hospital materials managers find it difficult to evaluate the impact of Auto ID DC technologi es on current processes in or der to make a decision about whether or not to adopt a technological alternative. This paper studies the impact of Auto ID DC technologies on the inventory management process in a hospital unit. In particular we will refer to implantable devices within a catheterization lab. We propose a conceptual design of the system and a quantitative modeling approach to handle these issues, and present our preliminary results from a spreadsheet-based tool.
