Areal diffusion and the development of evidentiality: Evidence from Hup

Contrasting linguistic ecologies: Indigenous and colonially mediated language contact in northwest Amazonia

This paper investigates the dynamics of multilingualism and the linguistic outcomes of contact involving indigenous languages in the northwest Amazonian Vaupés region. Despite points of continuity, a significant contrast exists between the processes and products of multilingual interaction among indigenous groups and that involving colonial entities. While indigenous interactions have tended to involve language maintenance, grammatical diffusion, and limited lexical borrowing, contact between indigenous and European languages has tended toward more code-switching, lexical borrowing, and large-scale language shift. These findings illustrate that attention to differing linguistic ecologies, with their associated social and cultural dynamics, is crucial to understanding the mechanisms and outcomes of language contact, and that we must be cautious in projecting the patterns of one context upon another.
Growing a numeral system: The historical development of numerals in an Amazonian language family

Numerals in many languages around the world can be argued to reflect a progressive build-up of historical stages (cf. Hurford 1987), each of which may also represent the synchronic upper limit of a numeral system in another language. This paper presents an intriguing test case of this claim by exploring the historical development of numerals in the languages of the Nadahup (Makú) family of the northwest Amazonian Vaupés region, in which the numeral strategies that can be inferred diachronically for one language are also represented synchronically in its sisters. The paper also demonstrates that even the most basic of the Nadahup numerals have transparent etymologies (a cross-linguistically unusual feature suggestive of their relatively recent development), and that areal diffusion contributed to the expansion of the systems, supporting the characterization of the Vaupés as a linguistic area.
Hup's typological treasures: Description and explanation in the study of an Amazonian language

This paper presents several of the typologically most intriguing features of Hup, an endangered Nadahup (Makú) language spoken in the northwest Amazonian Vaupés region, these are differential object marking, evidentially, noun classification, "bound" nouns and inalienable possession, and the multifunctional form teg. Each of these areas of Hup grammar and its typological significance are best understood within an approach that weaves explanation together with description, and in the process takes a view of language as a dynamic, non-autonomous system, which cannot be abstracted away from its own past or the culture and environment of its speakers.
Inheritance , calquing , or independent innovation? Reconstructing morphological complexity in Amazonian numerals

The reconstruction of morphologically complex forms offers familiar problems. As illustrated by textbook examples like Bloomfield's seemingly reconstructable anachronism - Algonquian 'fire-water' for 'whisky' - the existence of corresponding complex forms across related languages can alternatively be attributed to calquing or parallel independent innovation. This paper considers the problem of accounting for the history of complex forms in the context of the northwest Amazon, where lexical borrowing is actively resisted but calquing is rampant. Where complex forms are widely shared across related and unrelated languages, is there any hope of identifying their source, or establishing their relative age in particular groups of languages? I focus in particular on numeral terms, which reveal considerable complexity among northwest Amazonian languages. I evaluate the challenges encountered in gauging the time-depth and reconstructability of morphologically complex forms, and the criteria - comparative, typological, and geographical - that must be brought to bear in weighing more or less probable histories of complex forms. © 2013 by Koninklijke Brill NV, Leiden, The Netherlands.

Naduhup Languages and the Typology of Nominal Classification

Este artículo ofrece un ejemplo a través de una exploración de los fenómenos de clasificación nominal en la pequeña familia Naduhup (también conocida como Makú; Brasil/Colombia): si bien varios aspectos de estos sistemas han sido destacados en la literatura tipológica como raros o notables, una reconsideración de estos fenómenos a la luz de más datos y análisis sugieren revisiones significativas. Consideramos los fenómenos de clasificación nominal en las cuatro lenguas (hup, yuhup, dâw, nadëb) desde perspectivas sincrónicas y diacrónicas, y reevaluamos su relevancia para una tipología de clasificación más amplia.
Reconsidering the “Makú” Language Family of Northwest Amazonia

El objetivo es revisar las evidencias en las que se estableció la familia lingüística Makú-Puinave y proponer otra filiación agrupando las lenguas daw, nadöb, hup y yujup en la familia Nadahupan. Las lenguas kakwa y nukak se agrupan en otro brazo y se descarta afiliación del puinave como emparentado con las anteriores.

Consta de 14 capítulos, algunos en inglés, otros en español y portugués, que enfatizan aspectos de la interacción cultural y lingüística de los pueblos indígenas de esta región amazónica en un enfoque multidisciplinario que reúne a lingüistas y antropólogos.
