The purpose of this case study is to guide the reader through the process of incremental innovation of a product. The path towards innovation starts with a review of design trends and ends with a design brief. The case takes the company Gesta Diseño® as an example to illustrate an innovation process that enhances brand representation. The framework of incremental innovation for Gesta Diseño® assumes a small yet constant level of innovation which, supported by brand image, allows the company to achieve a competitive advantage in the market. The most relevant recommendation from this case is to use an incremental innovation strategy as an instrument to strengthen the brand of small companies.

(Universidad Icesi, 2012-01-01) Maroscia, Carla; Mollo Brisco, Gabriela
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a topic that has come to the forefront in the field of administration. Generally, it is analyzed in shades of white or black, from a virtually utopian or critical perspective. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate that CSR should be studied from a third perspective in which today’s companies face the new challenge of sustainability. CSR can be a very good strategy for achieving sustainability, thus resulting in a mutually beneficial and delicate symbiosis between business and society. To account for this, we opted to carry out case studies and complement them with interviews and documentary analysis.

In Colombia, only a few specialized studies have been conducted on the topic of strategy and strategic thinking with reference to employers and companies. The inquiry shows the findings of some research works on this subject at Universidad del Rosario, Universidad de los Andes, and, Icesi University in Cali, which are pioneers in these kinds of studies aiming at learning more about how Colombian managers think and act. In this opportunity, the question regarding this topic was addressed by the business management group at the CES University and the business sustainability group at Universidad del Rosario, who use the knowledge, obtained through conferences in entrepreneurial courses, to contribute to raising interest in defining the concept of strategy from the perspective of Colombian managers.

Policy transfer and lesson drawing: The case of the pension system reform in Mexico
(Universidad Icesi, 2012-01-01) Figueras Zanabria, Víctor Manuel; Culebro Moreno, Jorge Enrique
The article’s objective is to analyze the development and evolution of the Mexican pension reform not only as such but also of two main bodies: on the one hand, the regulator (the National Saving for Retirement) and the other, from the pension fund manager designed as a public-private partnership (PPP Manager Retirement Funds, Afore XXI). This article finds firstly, the existence of a horizontal degree of specialization and a potential lack of accountability and transparency in organizations responsible for regulating the pension system, and secondly that the presence of values that may compete in public officials in developing their roles have affected the development of a new pension system in Mexico and the performance of the regulator.

(Universidad Icesi, 2012-01-01) Reinoso Lastra, Juan Fernando
This proposal stems from two projects of the ECO research team at the University of Tolima titled “Business training educational project geared to social groups outside universities and technical training centers” and “Design and implementation of a virtual learning environment (VLE) aimed at entrepreneurial training of university students”. The learning objective is to orient an entrepreneur attitude (entrepreneurship) towards an enterprising attitude in a pedagogical way based on the use of information and communication technologies. The VLE is called “From entrepreneurs to business people.” In June of 2008, it was tested with 22 business administration students for the purpose of demonstrating that the VLE facilitates the development of entrepreneurial and business competencies.

(Universidad Icesi, 2012-01-01) Burotto, Juan Felix; Ganga Contreras, Francisco
This research work is aimed at determining whether there are any informational asymmetries between the presidents and the members of collegial bodies in Chilean universities. The framework of agency theory, in which the president of a university plays the role of agent while the collegial body serves as principal, assumes that this kind of asymmetry exists. The methodology was based on a closed-ended questionnaire where respondents had to demonstrate their knowledge of supposedly basic topics related to management performance. The results provide compelling evidence confirming the agency theory, which contends that an agent holds more information than a member of a collegial body, and, if internal, the member’s knowledge exceeds that of external members.

(Universidad Icesi, 2012-01-01) Palamary D'Aguillo, Rosa Esther
At the present time, advertising companies face pressure to compete in an environment where products and strategies are increasingly similar because of globalization. The success of these companies will depend on the practice of innovation in their activities and in human capital development. The purpose of this work is to establish a relationship between the formation of high performance teams and management strategies in advertising company projects. It is substantiated by correlational descriptive cross-sectional research following a non-experimental, descriptive, cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of companies located in the municipality of Maracaibo, Venezuela, which are members of the Advertising Agency Association. The results are useful for other companies that are willing to take on this challenge.

Estimación del efecto colegio en Colombia 1980-2009
(Universidad Icesi, 2012-01-01) López Mera, Silvio Fernando
Based on the results from ICFES tests (Colombian equivalent of the American SATs) from 1980 to 2009, the study uses a hierarchical/multi-level analysis to provide an estimate of the school effect in each educational sector for three different tests. The results suggest that the public school effect has always been smaller than that of private schools in the last thirty years and that the effect on the mathematics section of the test is always smaller, regardless of the educational sector. They also indicate that since 2000 there has been a considerable drop in the coefficient, which could be related to the change in the tests that year. Lastly, an intertemporal analysis of score percentiles reveals that private schools have traditionally ranked higher than their public counterparts.

Supplier selection is a critical process in supply chain management and business competitiveness. This article presents a decision-making model that optimizes allocation of demand across a set of suppliers considering expected losses associated with delivery defaults, purchasing costs, unforeseen costs of non-delivered supplies, and supplier management costs. An experimental and sensitivity analysis was carried out to study the behavior of the model with regard to key parameters. The results reveal that the proposed model is sensitive to these parameters and demonstrate the usefulness of the model to decision makers in this field.

The objective of this article is to provide an empirical verification of the existing relationship between the degree of innovation of a company and its performance. To this end, a study was carried out which involved 60 medium and high technology mSMEs in Cali, Colombia. The results of the study show that innovation in products and processes has a positive influence on the performance of the mSMEs. These results not only reinforce the claim that innovation can not only be a sustainable competitive advantage, but can also be useful to make entrepreneurs aware of the need to innovate in order to improve competitiveness, and to help public administration officials in their role as promoters of innovation through financial and non-financial assistance programs.
