The envelope openings of houses have a strong implication in the indoor environmental quality and energy consumption. Nevertheless, there are no precise regulations for its design in equatorial tropics. Normally these designs are based in the previous experiences and common sense of the architect. Determining the correct configuration of a design problem with the desired performance is now possible with the introduction of Parametric Design and Genetic Algorithms; through these it’s possible to obtain the best alternatives in the initial phase of design. The main focus of this investigation is to design windows that proportion adequate conditions of thermal and visual comfort, for a warm and humid tropical climate. The use of generative tools allows the evaluation of results in the initial stages of the project, giving the designer the possibility of choosing among diverse results with a high grade of efficiency and sustainability.

Nuevas visualidades del Diseño Industrial: superficies y crítica
(Universidad Icesi, 2012-07-01) Vidal Prada, Ernesto
It is intended to investigate the main benefits, negatives, and challenges generated by the use of digital tools for creating products. We propose a conceptual framework which incorporates the main definitions concerning the discipline of design and its relationship to the material creation of form and meaning, addressing in turn these concepts through time and the profound changes generated by the introduction of technology to the projection process of the designer. We refer to these new visual elements of industrial design as all technical images (renderings, modeled) generated by using specific software as a vital part in the current industrial design methodology. It analyzes the relationship between design and new technologies, on the problem areas the loss of materiality, standardization and industrial design trend surface. The research raises finally a theoretical-critical to the practical development of the discipline today.

Los parques lineales como nueva modalidad de espacio público inclusivo en la ciudad de Medellín
(Universidad Icesi, 2012-07-01) Herrán Cuartas, Coppelia
Among the many urban-architectural projects underway in Medellin, stared at the linear parks that extend throughout the city as a new form of public space. For this, we chose four parks in which we investigated the uses, practices and appropriations from the user as a result of these spatial transformations. While the interpretations identified users developed against these places and concepts that had the local government, when designed and constructed for public use and enjoyment appeared account users, different ways of understanding and meaning, possibly its creators did not consider at the outset. With a very marked emphasis on urban priority responds to a physical and aesthetic requirements when building these parks was seen as a secondary interest in meeting the needs of the real user and not ideal for this kind of wind.

    Interactive feedback on extended instruments
(Universidad Icesi, 2012-07-01) Román, Carlos Gustavo; O'Connell, John; Schmele, Timothy

The digital fabrication –FAB-DIG– has become one of the industrial processes that have had the most growth in Colombia not just in the business field but in the academy. The objective physic form finding –BOFF– is a morphology path generation methodology based on experimental processes of material generation, transformation and optimization. The nexus between FAB-DIG techniques and the BOFF processes might generate that the experimental forms must been taken directly to production, that is, that in the object design process the form path generated by the BOFF would be used as it is, and not only as a formal referent. The nexus development and methodology above, as realized in an investigation seedbed that involves the participation of UPB’s Industrial Design students, allows them to not only generate knowledge in the field, but, to implement the use of the new productive technologies, to define at the end the materialization impact of geometry obtained by BOFF processes using FAB-DIG.

(Universidad Icesi, 2012-07-01) Sáenz Muñoz, Marta
The strength and durability performance of a wooden frame for an upholstered sofa depend on two aspects: the implementation of a good structural design and how the manufacturing process is carried out. The aim of this study was to break down the current structural design of the wooden frame upholstered sofa of the Sinai model and its manufacturing process. The analysis was carried out using a computer simulation program where it was confirmed that the structure was oversized for the loads managed in service support. The Engineering design was the methodology proposed by Carl Eckelman. The analysis was carried out using SAP 2000® software. The static loads were simulated for both, the existing structure and the new structure, in order to verify the actual resistance and to ensure primarily, the performance of the new structure with the proposed changes. As a proposed recommendation it’s the wood material optimization and the implementation of some tools about Lean Manufacturing: The 5's philosophy and plant distribution.

Diseño y tecnología: aproximaciones de género en estudiantes de diseño industrial
(Universidad Icesi, 2012-07-01) Gutiérrez Borrero, Alfredo
In this article is examined the possibility of extending the social scope of design practice by recognizing the gender status of individuals, this from a review of primary sources linked to the observation of how gender issues affected the design and technology approaches in six groups of industrial design students while they formulated research proposals to their final degree projects. It is proposed a gender inclusive approach to support social processes of diffusion of technology through design, which implies promote a participatory mindset among designers, by means of which, according to his own experiences, all people be valued as partners of the projects; this as an alternative to the technocratic mindset where design criteria tend to be dictated by experts, as a rule, without any dialogue, reducing ordinary people to passive clients waiting to receive the progress so designers can bring to them.

The rapid growth of urban centers, the emerging technologies and the demand for new services by the increasing population introduce a new challenge: going towards smart cities. This concept has taken hold among the political, economic, social, academic, environmental and civil sectors, and several initiatives leads to the integration of infrastructure, technology and services for citizens. In this context, road safety and traffic efficiency became in key issues to be solved. New mechanisms are needed in order to reduce accidents and its mortality rate, also requirements such as the optimization of the urban mobility and municipal planning, fuel consumption and greenhouse gases emissions reduction and real-time systems that provide dynamic and effective information to travelers. This article describes two (2) approaches that contribute efficiently to the traffic safety problem: video games used as serious games and vehicular applications for intelligent transportation systems. Both approaches aims to reduce collisions and required a highly technological baseline to be implemented (e.g. telematic and computer systems, artificial intelligence, image processing and 3D modeling).
