Abstract
This systematization collects and analyzes the professional experience developed in a Palliative Care Unit (UCP) in Bogotá between October 2022 and July 2025. Its purpose is to understand the learnings, tensions, and meanings that emerge in accompanying people in the end-of-life stage, their caregivers, and the interdisciplinary team, from an approach of dignity, human rights, disability, humanization, and care. The field of palliative care has a history deeply linked to humanist sensibility. Its modern roots go back to the pioneering work of Cicely Saunders, who integrated nursing, social work, and medicine to found St. Christopher's Hospice in London in 1967. From this perspective, Saunders promoted the concept of “total pain,” which recognizes the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual dimensions of suffering (as cited in Centro de Humanización de la Salud, 2020). This legacy inspires current practices and offers an ethical horizon that guides professional intervention at the end of life. In coherence with this humanist tradition and with the methodological guidelines of systematization, I use the first person to reconstruct the lived experience.
