Abstract
A large industrial company routed to achieve the
environmental management certification (ISO
14001) got affected the process by the finding
a Tree –about to collapse– in a community
park adjacent to its facilities. The study of
the situation determines the presence of two
transformers, stored in the firm maintenance area.
An examination of its level of polychlorinated
biphenyls (PCBs) shows that 13 gallons have
been leaked, contaminating soil and likely to
have reached the sewer system of the city. The
community is alarmed, the media involved and the
company must make improvement plans imposed
by the environmental authority. Due to the fact,
changes occur within the company and the level
of development, new projects and expansion
plans abroad are suspended.
Description
Una gran empresa industrial, con un camino
recorrido para el logro de la certificación sobre la
gestión ambiental ISO 14001, ve truncado el proceso
por el hallazgo en un parque comunal -contiguo
a sus instalaciones- de una ceiba enferma, a punto
de colapsar. El estudio de la situación determina
que dos transformadores almacenados en su área
de mantenimiento han perdido trece galones de
bifenilos policlorinados (PCB) que se han derramado,
contaminando el suelo y con probabilidad de haber
alcanzado el sistema de alcantarillado de la ciudad.
La comunidad se alarma, los medios de comunicación
intervienen y la empresa debe realizar planes de
mejoramiento impuestos por la autoridad ambiental.
Como consecuencia del hecho se generan cambios
al interior de la empresa y el nivel de desarrollo,
los nuevos proyectos y los planes de expansión al
exterior se suspenden.
