This paper seeks to establish the basis for implementing a knowledge management system by taking as reference a manufacturing company of the region. With this objective, it explores the antecedents of the organization and the evolving dynamics of knowledge over the years up to reach the maturity needed to understand the need for a formal system that promotes the creation and use of knowledge. Then, are developed a series of concepts that are vital to understanding how to generate, capture, transfer, processing and chained knowledge , forming models which applicability depends on the organizational environment and the strength of management levers held by each company. Subsequently is presented the implementation plan of knowledge management system for the target company, in five stages from recognition of their importance to the organization until the integration of knowledge management as a key element of strategy and organizational routine. Finally, some conclusions and recommendations are presented, emphasizing the need to grant relevance and necessary resources to knowledge management initiatives, vital to functional development of an organization.
