Abstract

Pedagogical practice in hospital settings transcends curricular instruction to become an experience in which the teacher faces the fragility, pain, and uncertainty of the clinical environment. This article describes a qualitative action-research oriented to design a socio-emotional training resource for trainee teachers in a Hospital Classroom in Cali, Colombia. Through interviews, focus groups, and self-experience, the emotional challenges of future teachers were analyzed. The findings reveal that the hospital classroom constitutes an affective atmosphere configured by three nuclear affects: grief, empathy, and hope. In response, the study concludes with the collective design and validation of the booklet “Habitar la afectividad: sentires y cuidado en el Aula Hospitalaria” (Inhabiting Affectivity: Feelings and Care in the Hospital Classroom). This tool uses artistic and narrative mediations to strengthen the self-care and collective care of the teaching team. Finally, the research highlights the need to incorporate the socio-emotional dimension transversally into initial teacher training curricula, since the educator's well-being is a key factor in sustaining humanized and quality hospital pedagogy in contexts of high vulnerability.
