Clustering dynamics within the cultural industries: the case of Cali - Colombia.
(Universidad Icesi., 2017-01-01) Alonso Cifuentes, Julio Cesar; Rios, Ana María
The primary objective of this paper is to provide relevant information, from a microeconomic perspective, for the decision-making process followed by entrepreneurs interested in being part of the cultural industries (IC) in the city of Cali, Colombia. To that end, we will make use of a data clustering technique and the Herfindahl Index, to measure the dynamics of agglomeration within the IC, according to their absolute and average sales volume, the concentration of market power and the number of employees hired in average by each cultural subsector. We found that there is a strong asymmetry in the distribution of market share within the majority of cultural activities and a clear division of clusters of cultural subsectors whose behavior is similar for each variable analyzed.

An analysis of the learning objectives of "written communication" using rubrics: a preliminary review of the macroeconomic theory i course
(Linda G. Snetselaar - PhD, RDN, LD, FAND, 2014-01-01) Alonso Cifuentes, Julio César; Alonso Cifuentes, Julio Cesar
This paper discusses one of the peculiarities of information collected by rubrics, i.e. the qualitative nature of the categorical variables gathered. The qualitative nature of this data does not allow using conventional univariate statistical techniques such as, for example, calculating means and variances, or multivariate statistical techniques such as correlation or regression analysis. To address this issue, we turned to latent variable models and item response theory (e.g. a Rasch-family model). We apply this methodology to asses the "Written Communication " learning goal in a Macroeconomic Theory course.

Assessing the Forecasting Performance of Structural Models for the Nominal Exchange Rate : The Colombian Case *
(Researchgate, 2005-06-27) Alonso Cifuentes, Julio Cesar
This paper analyses the out-of-sample forecasting performance of three models for the USD/COP nominal exchange rate during the period 1984:I – 2004:I. The sticky price monetary (Dornbusch (1976) – Frankel (1979)) and the Balassa–Samuelson (which gives a central role to the productivity differentials) approaches are used. Additionally, the Purchasing Power Par ity condition (PPP) is analyzed. The forecasting ability of these models is comp ared using a random walk as a benchmark model. The metrics employed in evalua ting the forecasting performance are RMS, MAE, MAPE and U-Theil. It is found that despite the great ability to predict, no model outperforms the random walk. This conclusion strengthens the previous results in the nominal exchange rate modeling literature.

This document presents a proposal for using Standardized-exit exams to rank undergraduate programs. The proposed takes into account each program's mean score, volatility, students' proportion with scores above the national mean, and the number of students taking the exam. The document presents an application of the suggested index for two different programs in Colombia: Software Engineering and Industrial Engineering. The results show that five out of the top ten Industrial Engineering and Industrial Engineering programs are located in Bogota (the capital). On the other hand, 40% of the top ten Industrial Engineering and Software Engineering programs are offered by public schools. Finally, 60% of the top twenty Software Engineering programs hold a high quality accreditation. For Industrial Engineering programs 70% of the top twenty programs have the high quality accreditation. Future studies will determine the robustness of the proposed indicator to changes in its weights and its application to other professional programs and topics in standardized tests. However, this proposal represents an effort to process the results of standardized exams to provide information that can be used to compare educational programs and hence, for the assessment and formulation of educational policy.
