    Si bien la enseñanza del idioma inglés en países como Colombia no es tema nuevo, tampoco lo es el hecho de que dicha enseñanza carece de innovación y de resultados óptimos (Torres, 2018). Torres (2018) afirma que los colegios bilingües generan percepciones o ideales erróneos, en la medida en que se espera que los estudiantes se gradúen con un nivel avanzado de inglés, lo que les permitirá desenvolverse a nivel profesional y personal. No obstante, se evidencia que, luego de que los estudiantes hayan recibido lecciones consecutivas a lo largo de su etapa académica, estos apenas pueden evocar algunos conocimientos, frases o palabras propias del idioma inglés. Torres (2018) expone que la principal razón de dicha situación es la metodología que se utiliza en las instituciones para la enseñanza, ya que esta se basa principalmente en la memorización y repetición, dejando de lado aspectos como el pensamiento crítico. Bajo esta misma línea, la enseñanza en términos generales se ha caracterizado por el interés en satisfacer y cumplir con los fines que, desde la educación se han propuesto, por lo que de acuerdo a esos fines, las instituciones educativas esperan unos logros específicos por parte de los estudiantes. Sin embargo, se deja de lado la importancia de que el estudiante realmente quiera participar en dichas actividades propuestas (Cole, 1999). La motivación en los estudiantes permite que se mezclen los intereses, tanto de los educadores para obtener resultados, como de los estudiantes, por realizar una actividad que llame su atención.

    An analysis of students’ needs at programa de formación complementaria in Normal Superior de Popayán

    This study investigated the English language needs of the students in the Programa de Formación Complementaria in Escuela Normal Superior de Popayán from the perspectives of administrators, teachers and students (undergraduates and graduates) in order to evaluate the academic program and its constraints in a deeper way. Data was collected through interviews and focus groups, a total of 15 people were involved in the study. A questionnaire was also applied to a total of 35 students. After collecting the date, questionnaires were initially analyzed using three precoded categories: English language, students’ needs and constraints and the English academic program. The interviews were transcribed in order to comprehend in a better way the opinions and students´ interests and to facilitate the identification of repetitive patterns.

    Motivation is the motor for humans to accomplish a task. Many times, it determines success if we put it together with discipline. However, it is very important to take into account the factors that affect it in the different fields of life. To this regard, some authors mention different types of motivation, such as intrinsic, extrinsic and amotivation. To be motivated requires a series of characteristics that make an individual to behave oriented towards the achievement of a personal goal. In the field of language learning, there are some authors who describe some motivational components related to motivation and categorize them into three main dimensions such as the Language Level, the Learner Level, and the Learning Situation Level. Others talk about integrative and instrumental motivation toward language learning.

    "Aprendizaje basado en tareas con el uso de las TIC para promover la producción oral en la enseñanza del inglés".

    La enseñanza del inglés como lengua extranjera ha sido caracterizada por ser instruida bajo un modelo pedagógico tradicional en el cual el docente utiliza la lengua la mayor parte del tiempo, posee el conocimiento y diseña actividades de lectura y escritura en donde el estudiante debe responder correctamente; es decir, al final del curso el estudiante conoce como leer y escribir, pero no a comunicarse. No obstante, esta orientación pedagógica se ha renovado gracias a los diferentes cambios que se han dado en la enseñanza de idiomas. Las nuevas teorías de aprendizaje se enfocan en dar mayor protagonismo a los estudiantes, en desarrollar la competencia comunicativa de manera espontánea, y en convertir al docente en un orientador que ayuda a alcanzar un objetivo de aprendizaje.

    The impact of authentic materials on rural secondary english learners

    This Master’s research aims at describing to what extent the implementation of authentic materials (brochures, advertisements, product descriptions) impacts the intercultural competence of secondary EFL learners from a public rural high school in Nariño. This paper was carried out by collecting and analyzing the data by reviewing key concepts and designing a didactic sequence. Before applying all the elements of the didactic sequence, a semi-structured interview was applied. After this, a written and speaking pre-test was employed. Then, the didactic sequence was executed based on the concept of authenticity. Next, a written and speaking post-test phase was conducted for comparing results. Finally, an online questionnaire was employed to find out students’ perceptions after the implementation of this teaching strategy. After all, considering the findings, the application of materials based on authenticity helped students enhance their intercultural communicative competence and English-speaking and writing skills. A supplementary benefit of this didactic strategy, the application of the questionnaire shows an increase in curiosity and motivation when using brochures, advertisements, and product descriptions for speaking tasks.

    Let’s read about our own coffee land

    This project shows the incidence of the use of Coffee Culture readings in the vocabulary level of students. This leads students to learn more about their own culture. It also lets students to be aware of their natural wealth and the biodiversity that surrounds them. The research question that guided this project was what the incidence of vocabulary acquisition from foreign language readings related to the students’ own context is? The research project used classroom observations and individual students’ work, together with a conscientious analysis of relevant research about reading as a tool for improving vocabulary. I could conclude that readings about students’ real context enhance their interest in the class and make them feel self-confident, motivated and proud of their culture, leading us to results that demonstrate that it is possible to improve students' English lexicon through these kinds of readings.

    Use of gamification in the classroom as a motivating element for english learning as a foreign language.

    It is increasingly common to see bored, apathetic, and discouraged students in the classroom or with low motivation for learning a foreign language. This is partially explained because the current pedagogy, in English teaching as a foreign language, remains through the traditional model. A model that gives priority to memorization, repetition, construction of sentences in a certain structure, translation of texts word by word, using a set of grammar rules, and isolated vocabulary learning. At the same time, 21st-century students' interests and needs have not been considered; they use the Internet and technological devices as a resource for entertainment and fun. In the formalized learning system, teachers and educational institutions find themselves in the difficult task of competing against the various media and communication systems, which, in an attractive and increasingly innovative way, manage to capture students’ attention and keep them motivated for long periods. This is used strategically for consumption of content and products. On the one side, there are educational institutions with their traditional and boring practices, and on the other, media and new technologies provide an enjoyable learning experience. Here the key element is motivation. Anyone who effectively promotes motivation has at their disposal the fundamental element that moves people to do what they do.

    Aprendizaje basado en proyectos y fortalecimiento de competencias comunicativas en el área de inglés de estudiantes de grado 10° del colegio Comfandi El Prado en Cali

    La presente sistematización de experiencia educativa tiene como propósito principal determinar los aportes del Aprendizaje Basado en Proyectos (ABP) en el fortalecimiento de las competencias comunicativas en el área de inglés de los educandos de grado 10° del Colegio Comfandi El Prado en Cali. El enfoque metodológico es cualitativo y las técnicas de recolección de información empleadas son la valoración analítica y la entrevista semiestructurada. Para el logro del objetivo mencionado, se evalúa el desempeño académico en las competencias comunicativas del área de inglés obtenido por los estudiantes antes, durante y después de la intervención didáctica realizada; se caracterizan las percepciones de los profesores de inglés de grado 10° de la institución educativa acerca del ABP en relación con el fortalecimiento de las competencias comunicativas en dicho grado escolar; y se analizan las situaciones de aprendizaje fundamentadas en el ABP desarrolladas, a partir del fortalecimiento generado en las competencias comunicativas del inglés de los educandos indagados. Los resultados indican un fortalecimiento tanto general como específico de las competencias comunicativas en inglés de los educandos en y desde el ABP. La principal conclusión sugiere que el ABP otorga diversos aportes en el fortalecimiento de las competencias comunicativas en inglés de los estudiantes, entre ellos, aquellos relacionados con la exploración y profundización en este idioma desde sus aspectos formales, funcionales, sociales y culturales a partir de problemáticas y necesidades particulares y la gestión y acción en pro de encararlas. Al igual que en el establecimiento de un diálogo o comunicación directa entre escuela y sociedad, conocimiento y realidad, y aprendizaje y contexto en y desde el proceso educativo en el área de inglés.

    Strategies to motivate student´s oral production in english classes

    Getting students to participate in oral activities in English classes in a public school is a challenge for most teachers. This research seeks alternatives to implement in English classes and thus motivates students to participate in a communicative exchange. This article presents the analysis of the qualitative and quantitative results of the effects obtained by implementing music strategies and authentic tasks in the eighth grade of a public school in Cali city, taking into account the conclusions of the results of this research, teachers are encouraged to use these strategies to improve participation in oral activities in the classroom.

    Design, implementation, and evaluation of didactic sequences with SQ4R strategy to improve reading comprehension skills in english for the students from sixth to ninth grade of IE Ciudad de Cali sede Vásquez Cobo

    The purpose of this action research is to analyze if the Survey, Question, Read, Reflect, Recite, Review (SQ4R) strategy; is effective in helping students at the Ciudad de Cali sede Vásquez Cobo School to enhance reading comprehension skills. This research was carried out with 4 focus groups of 15 students each, from sixth to ninth grade of the school Ciudad de Cali sede Vásquez Cobo. The study was done in two cycles under the planning, implementation, observation, and reflection structure. The two cycles were divided according to the school calendar of the first and second academic periods. The first cycle ran from February 1 to June 16, 2002, and the second cycle began on July 25 and ended on September 3, 2022. Data collection instruments used are survey, observations, research diary and interviews. The teaching material created and used was didactic sequences based on the SQ4R teaching model. The observations were conducted during the months of February to September 2022. In the research diary were registered teacher’s opinions and perceptions of the implementation, and the student’s expressions and reactions of the activities. The results showed that using SQ4R teaching strategy for enhancing students´ reading comprehension skills was effective. In addition to this, it contributed to increase motivation and metacognition in the reading activities in the students, therefore the performance of the students in the English classes also improved.
