Ítem An analysis of students’ needs at programa de formación complementaria in Normal Superior de Popayán(Universidad Icesi, 2019-01-01) Burbano Astaiza, Paula Andrea; Biancha Ramirez , Hector Fabio; Asesor TesisThis study investigated the English language needs of the students in the Programa de Formación Complementaria in Escuela Normal Superior de Popayán from the perspectives of administrators, teachers and students (undergraduates and graduates) in order to evaluate the academic program and its constraints in a deeper way. Data was collected through interviews and focus groups, a total of 15 people were involved in the study. A questionnaire was also applied to a total of 35 students. After collecting the date, questionnaires were initially analyzed using three precoded categories: English language, students’ needs and constraints and the English academic program. The interviews were transcribed in order to comprehend in a better way the opinions and students´ interests and to facilitate the identification of repetitive patterns.Ítem Use of gamification in the classroom as a motivating element for english learning as a foreign language.(Universidad Icesi, 2022-01-01) Montaño Montaño, Roman; Aragón Caballero, Juan Manuel; Asesor TesisIt is increasingly common to see bored, apathetic, and discouraged students in the classroom or with low motivation for learning a foreign language. This is partially explained because the current pedagogy, in English teaching as a foreign language, remains through the traditional model. A model that gives priority to memorization, repetition, construction of sentences in a certain structure, translation of texts word by word, using a set of grammar rules, and isolated vocabulary learning. At the same time, 21st-century students' interests and needs have not been considered; they use the Internet and technological devices as a resource for entertainment and fun. In the formalized learning system, teachers and educational institutions find themselves in the difficult task of competing against the various media and communication systems, which, in an attractive and increasingly innovative way, manage to capture students’ attention and keep them motivated for long periods. This is used strategically for consumption of content and products. On the one side, there are educational institutions with their traditional and boring practices, and on the other, media and new technologies provide an enjoyable learning experience. Here the key element is motivation. Anyone who effectively promotes motivation has at their disposal the fundamental element that moves people to do what they do.Ítem Sistematización de la práctica educativa formación en portugués brasileño : módulo 01 - La fonética básica y la presentación personal(Universidad Icesi, 2022-01-01) Biagioni Nascimento, Paulo Fernando; Pardo, Alejandro; Asesor TesisEsta investigación se refiere a la sistematización del primer módulo - La fonética básica y la presentación personal - de la experiencia de aprendizaje “Formación en portugués brasileño”, enfocada en la enseñanza del idioma lusófono para colombianos. Se consideran elementos teóricos del abordaje comunicativo por tareas, la clase invertida y las TIC para su desarrollo. El objetivo fue reflexionar sobre las decisiones pedagógico-didácticas, las ventajas y dificultades encontradas en el proceso de diseño, implementación y resultados de la práctica para evaluar de esta manera, la práctica, el proceso metodológico llevado a cabo por el docente y el resultado del proceso por los estudiantes. Con el resultado encontrado fue posible analizar los aspectos favorables a un aprendizaje significativo, las herramientas TIC adecuadas para cada actividad, decisiones pedagógico-didácticas importantes para la ejecución y resultado y asimismo los aspectos por mejorar en prácticas futuras. Finalmente, se ha logrado realizar una práctica con resultados satisfactorios dado un contexto pandémico, remoto-virtual y de inestabilidad político-social.Ítem Design, implementation, and evaluation of didactic sequences with SQ4R strategy to improve reading comprehension skills in english for the students from sixth to ninth grade of IE Ciudad de Cali sede Vásquez Cobo(Universidad Icesi, 2022-01-01) Torres Tejada, Lizeth; Biancha Ramírez, Héctor Fabio; Asesor TesisThe purpose of this action research is to analyze if the Survey, Question, Read, Reflect, Recite, Review (SQ4R) strategy; is effective in helping students at the Ciudad de Cali sede Vásquez Cobo School to enhance reading comprehension skills. This research was carried out with 4 focus groups of 15 students each, from sixth to ninth grade of the school Ciudad de Cali sede Vásquez Cobo. The study was done in two cycles under the planning, implementation, observation, and reflection structure. The two cycles were divided according to the school calendar of the first and second academic periods. The first cycle ran from February 1 to June 16, 2002, and the second cycle began on July 25 and ended on September 3, 2022. Data collection instruments used are survey, observations, research diary and interviews. The teaching material created and used was didactic sequences based on the SQ4R teaching model. The observations were conducted during the months of February to September 2022. In the research diary were registered teacher’s opinions and perceptions of the implementation, and the student’s expressions and reactions of the activities. The results showed that using SQ4R teaching strategy for enhancing students´ reading comprehension skills was effective. In addition to this, it contributed to increase motivation and metacognition in the reading activities in the students, therefore the performance of the students in the English classes also improved.Ítem The impact of a customized didactic sequence, based on meaningful learning and language learning strategies, in the oral skills of a group of 11th graders in a public school in Cali, Colombia.(Universidad Icesi, 2022-01-01) Lugo Vallecilla, Luis Alberto; Díaz Mejía, Diana Margarita; Asesor TesisLa promoción de saberes a través de la enseñanza pasa por diversas formas de acercamiento, una es a través del reconocimiento de los estilos y estrategias de aprendizaje usados por los estudiantes; esto ayuda a que el profesor decida entre ser un agente protagonista de proceso de enseñanza, o un mediador que gestiona procesos autónomos de aprendizaje. Este artículo presenta el análisis del impacto de una secuencia didáctica basada en una estrategia de aprendizaje, y en el aprendizaje significativo, sobre la habilidad oral de un grupo de estudiantes de grado 11. Se trata de un estudio cualitativo con reflexiones de las percepciones de la muestra a la luz de teorías, conceptos y sus autores; en un primer momento se aplicó el Inventario SILL de Rebecca Oxford a 32 estudiantes de la institución fuente del estudio; seguido por una intervención con una secuencia didáctica adaptada a partir de los hallazgos de SILL, para el desarrollo de la habilidad oral; finalmente, se discutió el uso e impacto de la estrategia de aprendizaje usada sobre la habilidad propuesta, para el caso la estrategia Meta cognitiva de aprendizaje. La intervención dejó ver el mayor uso real de otras estrategias. En conclusión, llevar la estrategias de aprendizaje al contexto de la realidad ubicó a los estudiantes en otras estrategias, más no en la que ellos inicialmente creían; no obstante, la producción alrededor de la habilidad oral se vio favorecida por el trabajo planificado, monitoreado, con propósito e intención, propuesto por el docente investigador.Ítem Impact of the implementation of metacognitive strategies in the performance of 10th graders’ listening sub-skills.(Universidad Icesi, 2022-01-01) Cardozo Carrillo, Carolina; Rengifo Rivera, Diana Lorena; Asesor TesisTraditionally, listening comprehension skills in English classes are limited to fill-in-the-blank activities. Therefore, it has not been given the importance it deserves to reinforce learners' listening sub-skills. Moreover, there is a lack of training for them to consciously use metacognitive strategies to monitor their own listening process. In this master's thesis, the action research (AR) procedure was utilized. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected. Two focus groups (control and experimental) of 19 students each from the tenth grade at a public school in the city of Cali were selected. A metacognitive listening booklet was designed consisting of a pre-test, post-test, and five metacognitive interventions. These were elaborated based on the theory of authors such as Vandergrift and Goh (2012) and Wilson (2008) among others. Then, the results obtained after implementation in the experimental group are shown. Finally, conclusions are presented in which it is determined that there was a slightly positive impact on the listening sub-skills, mainly in predicting, inferring, and listening for global understanding in the group exposed to the metacognitive intervention. The most significant impact was on their metacognitive awareness. The process allowed us to observe the experience of the eighth grade students in a rural public school in their participation in meaningful activities. This reality mobilized in them cognitive connections that helped them in the identification and memory processes of key words in the foreign language. As can be seen in the development of the research, through the research question, the objectives, the theoretical framework, the methodology, the findings and the conclusions, this work is important because it allows us to verify that Ausubel’s contribution (1983) regarding meaningful learning supports this research. Carrying out meaningful learning and learning processes in foreign language teaching-learning contexts provides valuable components that allowed the researcher to obtain comprehensive results in relation to the learning processes of eighth grade students of a rural public school, giving as a result useful knowledge to put in practice in order to improve the foreign language learning.Ítem Improving writing and reading in english through the eclectic method with fourth grade students.(Universidad Icesi, 2022-01-01) Ocampo Jurado, Leydy Tatiana; Barrera, Jimmy; Asesor TesisThis research project was developed in the Agustin Nieto Caballero institution which is a public school with fourth-grade students of primary school and was planned and developed by the English teacher of the morning shift. The project had as its main objective to improve the reading and writing abilities in the English language learning process of students in fourth-grade applying and using some assumptions of the constructivism approach, total physical response, and audiovisual method as an Eclectic Method based on the plan class of the second term. The research was developed over seven weeks and its results show that students were improving their reading and writing abilities through the whole intervention process. Also, it makes the teacher/researcher reflect on their teaching practice and continue developing and planning learning experiences based on the application of the Eclectic Method.Ítem Systematization of the english remote learning practices during the pandemic at Univalle satellite Buga year 2020-2022.(Universidad Icesi, 2022-01-01) Moreno Prado, José Fernando; Biancha Ramírez, Héctor Fabio; Asesor TesisThis research paper exposes the results of the systematization of an educational practice at Universidad del Valle in Cali Satellite Buga, during 2020-2022 in which the participants were students of the subject English for Academic and General Purposes (Inglés con Fines Generales y Académicos) and their teachers. The Valle university offers students a minimum of three levels and a maximum of four levels of English to all the programs. Besides of fulfilling the requirements each program must get graduated, the English program has a communicative approach in which students are aimed to developed basic communicative skills, in a bilingual and multicultural environment, where a second language favors the academic, personal, and professional life to students. The main objective of this systematization is to organize, analyze and interpret three remote English learning experiences in order to identify which strategies and good practices enhanced the English communicative competence of university students in terms of the four linguistic skills, listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In addition, the following paper aims to critically analyze the most significant strategies, methodologies, and activities that have given either, positive or negative results in students from their application amid the three remote learning semesters during the Pandemic period. Above all, the idea is to carry out an investigation that integrates results and a proposal that contains a set of activities and strategies that are effective to enhance communicative skills in students at Valle university, Buga satellite that can be used nowadays as support for the face-to-face classes.
