    Diseño y desarrollo de estrategias para la Fundación Zoológica de Cali 2011-2013

    Resumen El objetivo propuesto es desarrollar una metodología que permita a una ONG, de carácter único, el Zoológico de la ciudad de Cali-Colombia 1 ; el diseño de estrategias organizacionales para el período 2011-2013, replicables en cualquier parque zoológico. Se aplican herramientas para el desarrollo del pensamiento sistémico en la visión, la misión y los valores; se estimula el pensamiento estratégico conociendo las diferentes escuelas sobre estrategia aplicándolas a la actividad de la ONG y se aplica el Balance Score Card, culminando con el planteamiento de los objetivos y tareas; al aplicarlos se fortalecen paralelamente los lineamientos sobre conservación propuestos por la WAZA, World Association of Zoos and Aquariums

    Activity scheduling for Cost-Time investment optimization in project management

    The Cost-Time Profile is a tool that presents the combined impact of disbursements made during the execution of a project, and their timing. The Cost-Time Profile chart presents the accumulated cost at any given time, and the area under the curve is the Cost-Time Investment. This Cost-Time Investment has a quantifiable impact on the working capital the company uses, and it is also useful for the determination of the Direct Cost of a product. This paper aims to develop a model to create the schedule of activities that minimizes the Cost-Time Investment for a project.

    A levels, readiness, and impact evaluation model for GS1 adoption in healthcare

    The use of GS1 data standards is envisioned to improve the efficiency of healthcare supply chain, as it did for retail. Care providers willing to adopt such a strategy in some or all of their operations often need to invest in process changes and technological installations or upgrades; however, they struggle to project returns on those investments and hence, find uncertain ROI a barrier to adoption. We present a hierarchical comprehensive model that helps potential adopters of various parts of the standards (what we term levels) evaluate their readiness requirements and quantify the impacts of their potential decisions in terms of non-monetary performance measures, such as productivity. The model design is showcased through practical examples.

    Behavioural queuing with interacting customers and service providers: A simulation based approach

    We address a service facility problem with captive interacting customers and service providers. This problem is modelled as a deterministic queuing system. Customers must routinely decide which facility to join for service, whereas service providers must decide how much to adjust the service capacity of their facilities. Both service providers and customers base their decisions on their perceptions about the system. Customers use their previous experience and that of their neighbours to update their perceptions about the average sojourn time, while service providers form their perceptions based on the queue length. We use cellular automata (CA) to model the interaction between customers and service providers. We perform a simulation to assess the way the customers' and service providers' decisions evolve and affect the system behaviour. Our results show that the more conservative the service providers, the larger the market share they achieve and the lower probability that their facility closes down. © ECMS Webjøm Rekdalsbakken.

    Cost-time profiling: Putting monetary measures onto value stream maps

    The Cost-Time Profile (CTP) is a tool that presents graphically the accumulation, of direct costs on a product as it moves through the manufacturing process. CTP incorporates the time dimension, to the cost accumulation, and the area under the CTP curve is the Cost-Time Investment (CTI), which is a measure of the investment of resources on the manufacturing of the product. In this paper, a general overview of the CTP, its construction, applications and future research directions are presented.

    Data standards in healthcare supply chain operations

    This paper presents the challenges and benefits associated with adoption of healthcare supply chain data standards in a hospital environment. In a highly fragmented industry like healthcare with several stakeholders, the adoption and use of common data standards for identifying delivery locations and products is critical. Common data standards ensure system wide interoperability and visibility across the supply chain, contributing to improvements in patient safety and streamlined internal and external supply chain operations. However, the global healthcare industry has been significantly slow in adopting data standards in comparison to other industries like retail, manufacturing. We discuss the results from data standard adoption pilot project conducted by Center for Innovation in Healthcare Logistics (CIHL), University of Arkansas at Washington Regional Medical Center, a 325 bed not-for-profit hospital in Fayet-teville, Arkansas. CIHL data standards pilot involved studying the existing supply chain processes, design, pilot-test, and evaluation of GS1 data standards adoption over a sample of products and a single delivery location at the hospital. We present the results, which demonstrate the capabilities of systemwide improvements and roadblocks likely to be encountered. Findings from the pilot can be expanded to develop a broad implementation plan of data standards adoption for healthcare providers.

    Designing an operations research course under active learning strategies

    Various activities and resources that are considered useful for an operations research (OR) class in Icesi University are discussed. The OR class is being offered today to business, industrial engineering, computer engineering and telecommunication engineering majors. The Icesi University is convinced that Active Learning is useful for its students' formative process. It is necessary that the Department Heads on each academic area work with their faculty in the development of curricula that formally introduces these concepts to each of the courses.

    Developing student outcomes in real-world learning experiences: The case of solar decathlon in Latin America

    Engineering students face a future in which professional skills (e.g., working in multidisciplinary teams, ethics, and communicate effectively) will be equally important as hard skills (e.g., design systems and solve technical problems). However, the development and assessment of these skills by the time of graduation is still a challenge for higher education institutions. In ABET terms, the student outcomes describe what students are expected to know and be able to do by the end of their undergraduate program. Thus, an ABET outcome might include a set of several skills. One strategy for developing these professional and hard skills is to expose engineering students to hands-on, real-world experiences. In this paper, a full analysis of how a multidisciplinary competition like the Solar Decathlon can contribute to the simultaneous development of various student outcomes is presented. The Solar Decathlon (SD) competition is an initiative of the U.S Department of Energy that challenges students to design, build, and operate sustainable, solar-powered, and affordable houses. A survey of all members of the team composed of students from the Universidad Icesi and the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana Cali participating in the Solar Decathlon for Latin America & Caribbean 2015 was carried out three times during the competition: at the beginning stage, in the middle of the project, and at the end of the competition. The goal was to analyze the attainment of student outcomes and their development over time. This team was comprised of 40 students from eight professional disciplines (including four industrial engineering students) for more than a year. Furthermore, this study presents how the interdisciplinary composition of the team evolved throughout the development of the project in order to fulfill the requirements of the competition. The role and participation of industrial engineers in this type of project was also examined as well as the primary personal and professional challenges experienced by the participants. Findings suggest that working and communicating effectively with students from other disciplines (i.e., multidisciplinary teaming) were among the main professional challenges students faced during the project. Likewise, respect for other people's perspectives and different paces of work between disciplines were the most common personal challenges. Lessons learned and recommendations for future competitors (institutions and students) are also presented.

    How to Foresee and Measure the Real Economic Impact of a Lean Manufacturing Implementation

    The academic and industrial worlds seem to agree in the convenience of implementing Lean Manufacturing. Arguments to highlight the benefits of implementing Lean usually include testimonials from successful companies, published case studies, even conference presentations, plant tours, and television programs. It is not easy to foresee the impact of a Lean implementation in strictly monetary terms. Lean is an operational philosophy that does more than saving money; it prepares companies for sustained improvement and creates disciplines and operational capabilities, yet it could be argued that these capabilities are hard to value and quantify. In this paper, we propose a flowchart-type methodology to decide if a change in a procedure, in the use of tangible resources or in the use of time brought about by the implementation of a Lean Manufacturing technique will have a measurable economic impact. The decision maker will need to know the specific circumstances of the production system, but we believe he will be able to predict the economic impact of a Lean implementation (or to evaluate the results of an ongoing Lean project) with more precision, to build a stronger and more comprehensible business case and convince upper management of the real benefits of Lean.

    Integrated curriculum design for an industrial engineering undergraduate program in Latin America

    The Industrial Engineering Department at Universidad Icesi led a systematic review of the Industrial Engineering (IE) undergraduate program curriculum. Universidad Icesi at Cali, Colombia is a private institution recognized among the best universities in the country. The curriculum review and design was conceived as part of the IE undergraduate program's continuous improvement process and took into consideration the fundamental principles supporting the institution's educational project or PEI (Proyecto Educativo Institucional), the principles established by CDIO (Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate) approach and the student outcomes defined by ABET. In this paper, the proposed IE integrated curriculum is presented. The curriculum allows for the development of the skills defined in the recent graduating student profile, skills that are mapped to student outcomes (a-k). Assessment results at the course and program levels are presented, as well as the consolidation of the program's continuous improvement process.

    Integrating supply chain data standards in healthcare operations and Electronic Health Records

    Electronic Health Records (EHRs) together with supporting information systems offer myriad possibilities for system wide improvements to data access, work flow and integrated information exchange. Parallel to these developments providers must implement supply chain based data standards to their operations in order to realize system interoperability and comprehensive data integration. Supply chain data standards are universal, unique and unambiguous identifiers for products and locations. Integrating supply chain standards in provider processes, clinical workflow, and ultimately in EHRs offers an ability to track products, serves as a basis for cost and clinical effectiveness, improves patient safety and quality outcomes. In this paper, we present the significance and benefits of adopting and transacting using supply chain data standards, improvement areas within provider operations, potential advantages of integrating supply chain standards with EHRs and barriers to healthcare provider implementation.

    Leanness score of value stream maps

    A Value Stream Map (VSM) allows lean practitioners to visualize the performance and conditions of manufacturing systems. While creating visibility for improvement plans, a measure of overall leanness level is not inherent in the map. This research proposes a methodology to measure the overall leanness of a VSM considering Cost, Time and output Value. Value-added and non-value-added investments are identified to quantify the level of leanness. Using the Data Envelopment Analysis technique, the leanness measure delivers a self-contained, unit-invariant score of the mapped system to support decision making on continuous improvement.

    Modeling the adoption of identification standards in US hospitals: A systems dynamics approach

    This paper summarizes the findings related to the current modeling efforts of identification standards adoption using a system dynamics SD modeling approach. A literature review on technology adoption provides the basis for the decision to utilize the SD approach. The SD model builds off previous findings related to the factors affecting identification standards adoption and relates the specific elements to the adoption rate. These elements are introduced in the model using a causal loop diagram, and then a stock flow model is constructed based on the Bass diffusion model. The model is used to simulate the behavior of the hospital population over time and to observe the impact of the external and internal diffusion coefficients in the adoption rate. Initial efforts focus on the provider perspective but other healthcare supply chain members can be introduced in the model due to its flexibility. The SD model allows for the analysis and design of policies to move the adoption process forward. The preliminary findings are discussed along with the implications on subsequent modeling efforts.

    Preparing for end of service life of wind turbines

    The wind power industry is growing rapidly. Wind turbines (WTs) are perceived as a low environmental impact energy generation technology. While the service life of a WT is relatively long (20-40 years), at some point a significant number of WTs will reach the end of their service lives. To recover maximum value from these WTs, planning for the end-of-service life of wind turbines (EOSLWTs) is paramount. Historically, environmental life cycle assessments of WTs have often only considered the materials extraction and processing, manufacturing, and use phases, leaving the management of EOSLWTs outside the scope of their attention. Four key EOSLWTs issues that are essential for the continuing development of wind energy technologies are presented: i) The challenges of managing of EOSLWTs given the fast growth rate of the industry and the large number of existing installed WTs; ii) The EOSLWT alternatives such as remanufacturing and recycling to recover functional and material value respectively; iii) The critical activities in the WT reverse supply chain such as recovery methods, logistics of transportation, quality of returns, and quality of reprocessed WTs; and iv) The economic and business issues associated with EOSLWTs. It is expected that the discussion provided will stimulate a dialog among decision makers and raise awareness of economic opportunities and unanticipated challenges in the wind power industry. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.     Parámetros óptimos para geometría de bodegas no tradicionales

    Tradicionalmente las bodegas han sido diseñadas bajo dos supuestos tácitos, los pasillos de picking son paralelos unos de otros y los pasillos atravesados son perpendiculares a los pasillos de picking. El Fishbone layout es un diseño no tradicional para bodegas de carga unitaria que replantea estos supuestos y logra mejorar la productividad aproximadamente en un 20%. Este proyecto desarrolla un estudio analítico del Fishbone layout, presentando alternativas para diferentes situaciones de interés en el sector real. El proceso de diseño se plantea como un problema de optimización no lineal y se concentra en la característica más importante del Fishbone layout, la pendiente del pasillo diagonal. Finalmente, el autor presenta una expresión analítica para la pendiente del pasillo diagonal y un análisis de sensibilidad que muestra la robustez del diseño.

    Stocks Of Knowledge And Organizational Performance: Dynamic Relationship

    The relationship between the level of knowledge and organizational performance has been studied by the academic commun ity and is receiving growing attention from decision makers in organizations. However it is not the case of the feedback relationship between performance and the level of knowledge, although this relationship has a dynamic pattern of behavior on both variables. This research poses a conceptual approach that involves a causal model of this feedback relationship, theoretically founded on the resource based view and the behavioral theory of the firm. The methodology involves the design and use of a system dynamics simulation model based on a pharmaceutical comp any which relates stocks of knowledge, innovation capability, financial performance and investments on knowledge stocks.

    This videogame is just like my plant!

    This paper presents a learning experience that was developed using the commercial videogame Rise of Nations for a graduate course on Manufacturing and Operations Strategy. This is a historical strategy game in which players compete by taking civilizations through progressive development stages. The game was employed under the Serious Games paradigm, in which a game is considered serious when it is used with an objective other than entertainment. This paper explains the objectives of the use of the game in the class, the regulations and learning guides that were employed, the experiences the students lived, the main points the students take away from the use of the game and other experiences that take place in the class in addition to the delivery of contents and development of skills. This experience took place at Universidad Icesi, in Cali, Colombia. © 2012 American Society for Engineering Education
