La Ingeniería Industrial y la Administración de Empresas llevan buena parte de su historia intentando modelar el comportamiento de los sistemas que son su objeto de estudio, como son las organizaciones y los sistemas productivos. Sin embargo, estos modelos se han basado sobre todo en la descomposición de los sistemas en sus componentes y las relaciones entre ellos, para luego describir sus comportamientos en estados ideales, estableciendo reglas que los sistemas deberían obedecer. Estos modelos pueden denominarse normativos, en el sentido de que se les está indicando a los sistemas cómo deben funcionar
Modelo de benchmarking de la cadena de abastecimiento para Pymes manufactureras

The benchmarking model for the supply chain of small and medium-sized manufacturers provides a handy guide for improving the logistics of their production processes. This article covers both the development of the model and the main results of its implementation in a sample of food processing companies in the City of Cali, surveyed by PRODES (a sector development program). The results of this study, obtained through trial applications of the model, provide guidelines both for ongoing research and for the future application of the model to other sectors. The model is based on the results of a study titled «Proposal for the Development of Integrated Logistical Systems for Small and Medium Enterprises», undertaken by the authors in furtherance of a Master’s Degree in Business Administration, in agreement with Tulane University
Desarrollo de una metodología de implementación de los conceptos de TOC (Teoría de restricciones), para empresas colombianas

The Theory of Constraints (TOC) is a managerial thought system that has been successfully applied in may companies around the world. However, implementation cases in colombian Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) are not many and not well documented. It follows that an implementation protocol has not been formalized yet. Researching through different information sources and doing pilot work in two plastics manufacturing SMEs sufficient insight was gained to propose a methodology that starts by diagnosing the current state of the company, satisfying some requirements prior to TOC implementation and the implementation process itself. As a conclusion, it was found that before undertaking any improvement process it is necessary to “clean up the house first”: To achieve clarity in basic issues of organization, operation and quality, to be able to guarantee the efectiveness and sustainability of any improvements attained.
Asymptotic analysis of singular solutions of the scalar and mean curvature equations - Semantic Scholar

We show that positive solutions of a semilinear elliptic problem in the Sobolev critical exponent with Newmann conditions, related to conformal deformation of metrics in R n + , are asymptotically symmetric in a neighborhood of the origin. As a consequence, we prove for a related problem of conformal deformation of metrics in R n + that if a solution satisfies a Kazdan-Warner-type identity, then the conformal metric can be realized as a smooth metric on S n + .
Beyond Partnerships: The Power Of Lean Supply Chains

Extending the value stream from a lean company to its partners allows the company to widen the pursuit for perfection to the whole supply network. Furthermore, applying lean concepts to a supply chain opens new windows of opportunity for supply chain participants to collectively achieve higher levels of competitiveness. Thus, the integration of supply chain management and lean thinking covers both local and overall leanness, which leads to a truly lean supply chain. This chapter provides an overview of the lean supply chain, the including concepts, approaches, challenges, and future development. In the first part of the chapter, basic concepts and impacts of lean thinking will be introduced, followed by the issues of applying lean thinking in supply chain management. Then, an integrated framework of a lean supply chain will be presented. The second part of the chapter covers the building blocks of lean supply chains, including lean logistics, information technology, performance measurement and improvement, and collaboration beyond partnerships. Subsequently, the challenges for building or maintaining a sustainable lean supply chain will be discussed.
Lean Manufacturing measurement : The relationships between Lean activities and Lean metrics

Lean Manufacturing was developed by Toyota Motor company to address their specific needs in a restricted market in times of economic trouble. These concepts have been studied and proven to be transferrable and applicable to a wide variety of industries. This paper aims to integrate a set of metrics that have been proposed by different authors in such a way that they are consistent with the different stages and elements of Lean Manufacturing implementations. To achieve this, two frameworks for Lean implementations are presented and then the main factors for success are used as the basis to propose metrics that measure the advance in these factors. A tabular display of the impact of “Lean activities” on the metrics is presented, proposing that many a priori assumptions about the benefits on many different levels of improvement should be accurate. Finally, some ideas for future research and extension of the applications proposed on this paper are presented as closing points.
Measuring the impact of Lean tools on the cost–time investment of a product using cost–time profiles

Traditional costing systems consider the accumulation of costs, but not their timing. Value stream mapping presents a good picture of the time consumed and operations performed for the production of a product within a manufacturing facility, but it does not track the accumulation of costs. The cost–time profile (CTP) is a tool that follows the accumulation of cost in the manufacturing of a product through time; and it finds the cost–time investment (CTI), which is an indicator of the use of resources in the manufacturing of a product through quantities and timing. In this paper, the expected impact of Lean implementations on the CTP and CTI is discussed. The CTP is proposed as a useful tool for the evaluation of the improvements achieved by the implementation of Lean tools and techniques.
Acceso al crédito y límites del crecimiento en Pymes: una mirada a través de la dinámica de sistemas

El acceso al crédito se considera como uno de los mayores problemas que deben afrontar las Pymes para su supervivencia y crecimiento. Este documento describe un modelo de dinámica de sistemas basado en el caso de una empresa manufacturera de tamaño mediano localizada en Colombia. El modelo integra aspectos operativos y financieros de la empresa e incluye variables asociadas con el crédito comercial y el crédito bancario. Se realizó un análisis de sensibilidad sobre el modelo con el fin de encontrar variables con un alto nivel de apalancamiento sobre los resultados deseados. Dichos resultados indican que las políticas operativas y financieras, cuando se aplican de manera aislada, no son suficientes para resolver los problemas de estancamiento de la empresa. Una combinación apropiada de acceso a crédito, condiciones de crédito, y políticas operativas y financieras adecuadas, parece ser la manera más conveniente para manejar la complejidad inherente a la supervivencia y crecimiento de las Pymes.

This paper presents the process of designing a course to teach Lean Manufacturing to working professionals using systems thinking. This design process is conducted for the development of job competencies and using Active Learning Strategies.

Estas posibilidades son descritas en detalle a partir del proceso de investigación desarrollado en el Departamento de Ingeniería Industrial en la Universidad Icesi.
Evaluation of the Reliability of a Water Supply Network from Right-Censored and Left-Truncated Break Data

In this paper, we analyze failure data registered in a water supply network in order to evaluate the pipes failure probability. Only failures in normal operation conditions have been considered, excluding those caused by abnormal events. We consider an observation window from year 2000 until 2005, although the life of some of the water pipes started far in the past. This sampling scheme induces left-truncation into the data set (since failures before 2000 are not considered into the sample information) and right-censoring (for pipes that fail after 2005). We used an extended version of the Nelson–Aalen estimator, modified in order to accommodate left-truncation besides right-censoring (LTRC). Influencing factors on water pipes survival are identified. By the use of a semiparametric model based on the Cox proportional hazards model, also adapted to manage left-truncated and right-censored data, the effect of each factor over the failure risk of a pipe section has been estimated.
A Novel GS1 Data Standard Adoption Roadmap for Healthcare Providers

The use of GS1 Data Standards is envisioned to improve the efficiency of the healthcare supply chain as it did for the retail supply chain. The healthcare industry, especially providers, acknowledges their potentials; however, there are misconceptions and lack of understanding the associated costs and expected benefits. This study presents an adoption roadmap for GS1 Data Standards at the provider level in healthcare industry. The developed roadmap is a result of systematic efforts at conducting extensive studies, examining the best practices, and interacting with industry leaders. The adoption roadmap includes different levels and sublevels to provide a flexible foundation for healthcare providers where alternative adoption paths will be available for their immediate needs and requirements. Sublevels have a recommended precedence structure to realize maximum gains from the adoptions. The feasibility and practicality of the developed roadmap has been validated by two pilot studies, which were conducted in collaboration with two hospital provider partners. The pilot studies helped identify potential benefits as well as roadblocks and barriers for different levels of GS1 Data Standards adoption. The results indicate that the adoption is not an easy process and may require many workarounds; however, the potential gains are significant.

The objective of the case discussed here is to present the complex situation that arises at a large raw material manufacturing company in the construction industry when its integrated information management system collapses; a situation commonly known as “a system crash”. These kinds of system failures constrain logistical activities related to the distribution center that is responsible for shipping orders on a national level on the sales closing date at the end of a given month. This hampers the order invoicing process and, therefore, gives rise to non-compliance with order deliveries, customer dissatisfaction, potential loss of orders, and non-compliance with the company’s sales goals, thus affecting the profitability.

A large industrial company routed to achieve the environmental management certification (ISO 14001) got affected the process by the finding a Tree –about to collapse– in a community park adjacent to its facilities. The study of the situation determines the presence of two transformers, stored in the firm maintenance area. An examination of its level of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) shows that 13 gallons have been leaked, contaminating soil and likely to have reached the sewer system of the city. The community is alarmed, the media involved and the company must make improvement plans imposed by the environmental authority. Due to the fact, changes occur within the company and the level of development, new projects and expansion plans abroad are suspended.

The primary objective of this case study is to discuss how a company can address environmental concerns raised by regional environmental regulatory authorities using a strategic industrial ecology for the purpose of ensuring the future sustainable development of the company. It places emphasis on the fact that, despite being the most important tactical asset in the operations of most companies, water resources are ignored and seen ad inexhaustible. It is intended as a wake-up call for top management officials to realize that there is a need for a conceptual change because environmental department managers in many companies do not receive the necessary support for implementing new environmentally friendly technologies.
Financial risk assessment of different inventory policies

Este trabajo se concentra en la evaluación de los efectos económicos asociados a diferentes políticas de inventario. Se estudia el valor en riesgo del valor de una compañía, además de las variaciones inducidas por los cambios en el capital de trabajo asociados a diferentes políticas de inventario. Se estudian tres sistemas de inventario y se comparan diferentes políticas. Se contrastan las políticas derivadas de la maximización del valor presente neto (VPN) contra la minimización de costos y contra políticas de inventario arbitrarias derivadas de las condiciones de mercado. Para cada sistema de inventario se estiman dos indicadores de desempeño: VPN y VaR del VPN. Las políticas de inventario se construyeron en un escenario de certeza, pero se evalúan incorporando diferentes condiciones de riesgo, para lo cual se utiliza simulación de Monte Carlo. Las conclusiones se obtienen a partir del desempeño observado en diferentes casos de estudio, usando ambos indicadores. En los tres sistemas de inventario bajo estudio, la diferencia entre precio y costo variable es lo que causa la mayor variación en el indicador del VPN. Un resultado importante de este trabajo es que para los casos estudiados, más bien comunes en el mundo real, las políticas de inventario óptimo obtenidas por minimización de costos son, desde la perspectiva de la minimización de riesgo, tan buenas como las obtenidas mediante maximización del beneficio.
Metodología para la determinación de la huella ecológica en el área de exhibiciones del zoológico de Cali

The design, development and calculation of the Ecological Footprint are a universally accepted concept to measure and dimension the impact of human activities on natural resources. This article is the result of the investigation conducted at the Zoo of Cali (Colombia), in which an instrument was designed, applied and validated to determine the ecological footprint of the exhibition areas the different species of animals between July and November 2009. This is the first experience in Colombia to measure the footprint in a Zoo, which regards this service as a unique and exceptional activity. The development of this trail involved the lifting of eco maps and operational processes of each exhibition, as well as evaluating the types of resources consumed and the amount of waste they generate, to proceed to the calculation of the overall impact. El WIP como objetivo estratégico en la distribución de planta

This paper presents a model to generate the layout of a facility, minimizing the work in process (WIP) for a production system that uses multiple material handling systems. Using WIP as an objective in a facility layout problem is a novel approach. WIP is an operating performance measure that impacts directly in the production costs, and is generally not considered in facility layout problems. As a result, we present a model to design facility layouts with a better WIP performance than the ones designed by a model with a single material handling system
An MIP model to optimize a Colombian cash supply chain

Financial institutions operate a supply chain where only one product is moved across the network. Although the cash is kept in several nodes to service the demand of final customers, availability causes opportunity cost related with its investment options. When planning the inventory of cash that should be maintained across the network, transportation decisions are also expected to be made. Cash transportation has a high cost, associated with the high risk of theft. Increasing the inventory can reduce the need for transportation, but the opportunity cost can be very high. Moreover, the inventory is also related with the service level perceived for final customers; therefore because of low inventory some people are not able to make some transactions. The aim of this work is to find optimal decisions related with cash inventory and transportation across the network, trying to balance the cost of the service and the quality perceived for final users.
